The architect updated a languishing 160-year-old wood house, respecting the existing architectural features while adding contemporary amenities suitable to the original grandeur yet functional for today's lifestyle. A major design strategy was to integrate the house interiors with the garden by building a gracious curved terrace that connects the living room to the eat-in kitchen and facilitates both formal parties with catering and, even more importantly, informal day to day use.

The historic octagon-shaped cupola was provided with new and more direct stair access at the upper hall and it is now a functional study-lookout over Cambridge.
